He could feel them watching.

Josef stood bare feet in his room for ten seconds and looked around. It was the same, but different. He couldn’t tell how different; it was just different. Perhaps it simply felt different.  Or maybe he was different.

The room smelled like stale cigars, stale whiskey and bad breath.

Josef had never prided himself on his cleanliness.

He prided himself on his ability to get the job done. At any cost. The ends justified the means. Always.

He’d been a terrifying man, given to fits of anger and blind outbursts or rage. Which accounted for his rapid rise in the ranks of the DHS. He found a place where he fit in. His murderous rages were not only rewarded, they were both justified and applauded.

As long as he could control himself around his superiors, he could get away with anything.

Give him a gun, a badge, and he could do what he wanted. Such a feeling of power!

But he didn’t feel so powerful at this moment. Not standing in this room now.

His room looked filthy and ridiculous.

He couldn’t believe he’d been such an animal.

He couldn’t believe one encounter with a stranger named Paul made him see things so differently. Made him feel so different. So much more alive.  So much a part of all humanity.

He’d been ordered to kill or capture. Instead, he had joined with what was once the enemy. He was now part of the Hive. And he finally felt human.

This was his first mission failure. But it felt more like his biggest success.

He looked around the room and made mental notes of what he would clean up first. The kitchen table. The dishes. The empty beer bottles.

Taking off his shirt, unholstering his weapon and sitting on the edge of the chair to remove his shoes and socks, he prepared to take a shower.

Josef was still covered with dried blood and debris from the explosions.

He had walked away from fallen comrades, and instead of killing the group responsible, he had joined with them.

That would be unforgiveable in the DHS. But, no matter.

This thought left a brief twinge of regret for the man he once was—but this was quickly replaced with joy for what he had become.

He was connected to the Hive. He could feel more minds connecting as he sat there getting ready to clean himself off.

The shower would be his official baptism.

He smiled. He felt accepted. Not just by the small group within the DHS, but by everyone. He would no longer have to compete with another human being for anything. Not for jobs. Not for money. Not for love.

He was now part of a growing collective. All would be shared if you were in the Hive.

Standing in the shower, turning the cold water on as high as possible, he felt his skin become taught and felt his old, underlying feelings of anxiety wash from his soul as easily as the dried blood sloughed from his skin.

The cold water was revitalizing. It shocked him awake.

His eyes were open. He saw his old life for what it was: a life of addiction, endless cravings, long stints of boredom, mixed with daily confusion, distress and social isolation.

He did what he was told by the government and got rewarded for it. Day in, day out.

This created a Pavlovian system of rewards and punishment that kept him completely brainwashed throughout his entire career—throughout his adult life.

He was Russian. He should have recognized it earlier.

But was it not the same for any person plugged into the delusions of the corporation? You show up for 8, 12, 14 hours a day and are constantly bombarded by corporate messages, constantly harangued by the distant drumbeats emanating from somewhere deep within the jungle of the corporate boardroom.

These messages eventually drill themselves into your consciousness and soon, you believe them. You believe every word. Making you nothing more than a corporate drone. Willing to do their bidding for but a scrap of a reward.

Just like one of Pavolv’s dogs.

The phone rang, interrupting Josef’s reverie.

Stepping from the cold shower, not bothering to towel dry, Josef reached for his cell phone, next to the empty beer bottle.

It was the Secretary of Defense.

“What do you mean they fucking got away?” the voice bellowed from somewhere over the ether.

Josef smiled. He had learned early in his career to stick to the facts. He wasn’t paid to provide analysis, editorialize, or give opinions unless specifically asked. “They must have help from a foreign enemy. What they did to us and how they escaped is simply not possible with our existing technology. They escaped as if by magic.”

“Magic?” The voice howled. Josef could imagine the SECDEF rubbing his stubby fingers through his greasy hair. “Are you fucking kidding me?”

“No, sir.”

“I want a full report within the hour, Josef. Within the hour.”

“Yes, sir.”

“And one more thing, Josef,” The Secretary drawled.

“What’s that sir?”

“You’re being reassigned to a desk job pending a full review.” Josef could hear the SECDEF draw in sharp breaths of air between syllables.

Josef cocked a burnt eyebrow.

“Copy that.”

More later.

  1. Love that line about being in the DHS, his murderous rages were no longer accepted but rewarded and applauded.

Love how Josef has become part of a Hive mind.

That’s certainly the Global Brain and World Mind that David Spangler of the Findhorn Foundation and Benjamin Creme of Maitreya’s Share International saw coming.

The goal of the New Age Movement.

It’s admittedly a more compassionate form and pantheistic form of Calvinism.

In Calvinism, free will didn’t exist because the God of Calvin (who was actually the Devil) had already pre-destined who was going to Heaven and who was going to Hell before the dawn of time. So Calvinists, Scottish Presbyterians, New England Puritans, Cromwellian Puritans, Swiss Reformed and Dutch Reformed believe.

In the New Age and the Hive mind, free will is done away with because everyone has a Mind overlord directing their thoughts and actions.

Paul’s Hive mind controlling ability is the incarnation of Spangler’s Global Brain, Creme’s World Mind and Teilhard’s Noosphere come to pass.

But free will for humanity (which was the desire of Christ in his role as Creator) will be done away.

Admittedly humans having free will allows for the possibility of evil.

That’s why in Aldous Huxley’s Brave New World, free will was done away with by taking medications and drugs and pharmaceuticals.

So everyone thought the same and was happy but they weren’t free.

In Paul’s Hive world, everybody feels happy and united because mind overlord Paul is telling them what to think and feel.

    But they aren’t free.

In that Paul has unintentionally become the Antichrist (the real and true god of John Calvin) because he has taken away the free will of every individual human being.

    1. You are correct in your analysis Dracul, as always. The human mind, with its “free will” with its massive egotistic demands, has been responsible for the annihilation of more than 100 million human lives in the 20th Century alone…and humanity is now poised on the brink of extinction–like the dinosaurs–through complete ecological collapse. The earth with survive, but we won’t. Paul is not the Anti-Christ–not intentionally–but he is unintentionally becoming the Overlord to save mankind from itself. Stay tuned. Thanks for the deep dive!

  2. I totally agree with Dracul but that takes nothing away from this great piece of writing. Now we have two forces vying to impose the New World Order via complete control of every Earthian mind. The old force through fear and violence and the new through mindless feel good acquiescence. Basically you have Orwell’s 1984 versus Brave New World/Stranger in a Strange Land. Who wins? Those who have the best control or those who have the best understanding of human nature?

    1. Thank you Sha’ See my response to Dracul…I’ll take a small bow on your description as this being a “great piece of writing.” I think I see myself improving, and I believe it is not moving in the direction it was originally intended. It pays to stick with it and not be insulted so much by some that I stop writing altogether. As I like to say….”more later…”

      1. It IS moving in the direction that was originally intended. A reply to Dracul was meant for you. There’s a new WP editing/blogging format that I need to get used to…

  3. Another great scene as another government baddie is converted to the new way of nanites. I got a real hoot out of the opening description of Josef being fowl and angry allowing for great success. I also got a bigger hoot out of the reference to Pavlov’s dogs and then the phone rings. I imagined Josef drooled a little. The story telling through Josef’s introspection is excellent. Just the facts, leave the emotions to the ones that need to cry as their career is flushed. Not Josef. He doesn’t seem to be the guy you want to declare yourself an enemy to. Another top notch chapter down, Bro.

      1. I am reminded of Robert Ludlum’s work. Of course, he was actually a corporation of writers that cranked out stories like a house on fire, but Ludlum always started out slow and built the characters, the scene, the situation, added some action and subterfuge and then 3/4 through the novel he busts loose with page flipping action leading to the cataclysmic end. All this to say, what made his formula work was how he slowly pulled you in then beat the hell out of you with fast action and multi-layered subplot. You got this down Bro. Every line contains a gem and builds on the previous line, paragraph, chapter. This novel has it all. I’m hoping you become a literary megalopolis of noveldom like Ludlum so I can ride out the rest of my life glued to the edge of my man-chair engrossed in your novels. That way, I can ignore all the terrifying stuff that is happening outside.

      2. Ah, Ludlum. You flatter me. I absorbed most, if not all, of his books back in the day….and I can tell you the movies do not do him justice. His plots are unfolding riddles wrapped in enigma’s wrapped in mysteries…Here’s to you being glued to your man-chair as we approach technological enlightenment with our little nanite friends! Tallly-Ho!

  4. Josef character is quite funny and close to every day life. You are brewing a war by bringing new characters so well into the story out of no where. It perfectly fits into this. I wonder from here where you are leading us.

    1. Thank you dessert! This rambling story will coalesce soon…so thanks for sticking with it. Josef was a DHS agent introduced in the previous segment, and is one of the first infected with Paul’s nanites…there will be many more…

    1. Thanks Spawn. Your motivational comment comes right in the nick of time, as I am meditating on the next episode which takes a bit of a leap from where we are now. Just to jump start the story, mind you.
