“Akira could hear pitchforks hitting the pavement”

Paul froze in his tracks. Akira leaned on him firmly, pressing him towards the exit.

“No,” he said simply.

Billy-Bob and Lasseter grabbed him by the arm, tried pulling him off the balcony.

“Never underestimate the power of the right moment,” he said, spinning, turning back to face the crowd.

“What?” Billy-Bob, stunned.

“This is my moment,” he answered, lips upturned.

Paul raised his arms, the sleeves of his multi-colored robes swaying gently in the wind.

“I am your Christ. I am your Buddha,” He announced, raising his hands towards the sky, his fingers stretching toward the heavens.

Akira turned quickly, her defensive algorithms gearing up, expecting to see pitchforks hurling towards them.

“I am the resurrection,” Paul continued. “I am your truth. We are the nanosphere!”

A stunned silence fell over the crowd as hundreds of eyes fell upon Paul.

“Can you feel them?” Paul asked.

Billy-Bob and Lasseter exchanged glances. Shrugged.

“It’s absolutely sublime,” Paul whispered. “This is my exalted moment. Look at them Lasseter, Billy-Bob. You too Akira. Hundreds of souls falling into synchronization. They have little in common but me. Listen to their breathing. Listen to their heart beats. Feel their bodies and souls come together as one.”

Billy-Bob and Lasseter looked out upon the crowd.

“They are falling into a single rhythm,” Akira stated flatly. “Like one pulse. One heartbeat. It’s quantifiable.”

“Coincidence?” Billy-Bob asked, nudging Lasseter.

“No such thing,” Lasseter responded. “Everything’s connected.”

“These people are connected to me,” Paul answered. “Through the nanites. Connected directly into my mind. We are now one consciousness.”

“Welcome to the nanosphere,” Paul yelled loudly. “The merger of science, technology and spirituality is now complete. This is your second coming!”

Billy-Bob’s hand slid onto Lasseter’s shoulder, gripping it firmly, as he leaned in and whispered, “Is Paul starting to believe his own bullshit?”

“It’s not bullshit,” Paul replied, overhearing, moving only the corner of his mouth.

“It’s true, Billy-Bob. Science will never lead the masses to realize who they truly are. Will never lead the masses to true peace. I see this now as an absolute truth. Why had I not seen this earlier? Scientists are the ones who create Frankenstein monsters and atom bombs. The number of lives scientists take exceed the number of lives they save.”

Paul turned his back toward Billy-Bob and faced the crowd once again. The crowd, the masses, now moved as one, breaths and chests now heaved and moved as one organism, as if a giant whale had come to occupy the courtyard.

“Can you feel it, my children?”

“My children?” Billy-Bob repeated, his face contorting.

“Feel the peace, purity and wisdom emerging from our intertwined minds. Feel your neighbor as you feel yourself. When you hate your neighbor, you hate yourself. When you hurt your neighbor, you hurt yourself…”

A sigh came from the crowd sounding like a gentle breeze.

“…and when you love your neighbor, you love yourself.”

Silently, the heads in the crowd turned as people looked at each other, as if for the first time.

“I am your reality,” Paul continued, “The nanosphere is your reality.”

A loud whoop.

“I have no agenda but to set you free. Church leaders, politicians, those with agenda’s, are nothing more than salesman who lie and manipulate to enslave you….”

Paul inhaled before continuing…

“I want nothing from you but to save you from yourselves.  I am your connection to the nanosphere. Through me, through technology, I will set you free!”

The crowd roared. Akira could hear the sound of metal pitchforks hitting the pavement.

‘We’d better pack up our nanites and get outta dodge,” Billy-Bob interrupted, looking skyward, watching what were once little black dots grow perceptively larger.

Black Hawk Helicopters. Getting dangerously close.

Paul lowered his arms and spread them forward as if to embrace the entire crowd.

“You got this?” His face turned grim as he turned toward Akira.

Akira met his eyes. She saw eyes that were once bright with hope become clouded with fear.

Without saying a word, she reached deep into her robe with her right hand, calmly removed a small object, cupped her fingers around it and placed it in her palm, then held it directly in Paul’s line of sight.

A cellphone.

The sunlight glimmered off its reflective surface.

“I got this.”

More later.

  1. I am your Christ. I am your Buddha…his fingers stretching towards the heavens…🤓 I see a painting … and I’m curious about the cellphone….once when I took a writing course we weren’t allowed to say much…just repeat some of the words or say “say more” … I’m curious so I keep reading along…I also like your threads here George ~ I’ll revisit for them ☺️ happy weekend writing ☺️🙋‍♀️ hedy

    1. Paul is definitely taking his role as New Age Messiah to heart.

I am the Christ…I am the Buddha… that’s what the New Age Messiah will say.

And telling people to get their hearts in rhythm

Reminds me of the female Shaman from the Amazon and worshipper of Pachamama tell the Italian Conference of Catholic Bishops at a concert last December to put their hands over their hearts and get their hearts in rhythm with the heartbeat of Mother Earth Pachamama.

A few months later Covid-19 emerged from China and the first Western country to be hit was Italy.

One could ask the Italian bishops, How did that work out for you?

Love your photo of the Hindu goddess Kali.

Appropriate you posted it during the Hindu festival of Navrati (nine days devoted to the Hindu goddess Durga).

Another example of Jungian synchronicity at work.

And I’m waiting to see what Akira does to those Black Hawk helicopters with that smart phone.

Love that line about Paul starting to believe his own bullshit.

That actually happens with most cult leaders and would-be Messiahs.

They may start out to influence or deceive others with a tall tale but after a while they start to believe their own bullshit.

      1. My God I’m glad you’re here…yes, I believe Jim Jones came to believe his own bullshit. When enough people worship you, you will believe even the shit you previously knew you just made up. Why not? Everyone else believes it? LOL!

  2. Yes, Jim Jones started to believe his own bullshit.

Strange just before the Jonestown Massacre happened, then President Jimmy Carter was to attend a dinner in San Francisco where he was to present Rev. Jones with a Humanitarian of the Year Award (the dinner had been scheduled for a couple of weeks after the date when the Jonestown Kool-Aid drinking occurred).

After the Jonestown Massacre, the dinner was cancelled for some reaaon.

    1. LOL! Just as the CEO’s of ENRON dined with Presidents before they all went to jail. Then no one knew their names. Even the greatest among us can be taken in by those who spin tall tales. Humanitarian of the year…Indeed! OMG! LOL!

      1. You, however, ARE a writer. Your productivity does not go unnoticed. I imagine you, sitting quietly in the corner of the cafe, head down, hammering away at the keyboard inspired by the absurdity of current events.

  3. I’m channeling Stranger in a Strange Land and God Emperor of Dune. There’s a lot of Grokking going on here. My feelings were a little hurt to read once again my associates in science are the true evil of this earth. We all think the anarchists are the problem. But, isn’t that the way it goes? Logic and facts always fall prey to the evil doers. What we need is a true Scientologist like Paul that is Nanite aware enough to unite the masses and instead of selling self enrichment plans that usually involves illicit sex for money donated by the believers, we get tuned to all the right things and believe with all our hearts, it’s the right thing to do. Bass and the boys are in for a rough ride to retirement. I can’t wait for Akira to hack into the Blackhawks and make them zoom around playing William Tell Overture on their psyops speakers. It’s crunch time and I’m all ready to ride the story to glory with Paul and crew.

    1. Scientist’s are NOT really the true evil…but people have been brainwashed into thinking they are…by who? By the same people who who burn you at the stake for being a witch…yes, society is regressing that much! Science? My God can change your facts at the snap of a finger! Paul may indeed be turning into the Emperor of Dune…very high praise indeed, thank you! William Tell Overture…great suggestion for background music as Akira begins playing with her toys! Thanks! Mohahahahahaaa!

      1. LOL! Yes indeed. The bash the scientist meme comes up all the time. Mostly, the vitriol comes from people whose only contact with science was in grade school and since they didn’t get an A for Assclown for showing up, the hate began. personally, I like the idea of a nanite based religious leader with a science background and hot looking alien Chief of Staff with a cell phone that makes Armies obsolete. Paul is going to have to be very careful what he says tho. One accidental awww shit, and the planet will be uninhabitable in the centers of civilization.

      2. LOL! Take a moment to read my comment to Corkywk, and you’ll see my real feelings on Science bashing. I’m actually appalled and can’t believe it! I’ll take a hot looking alien chief of staff too! At his point in history, anything would be an improvement!

      3. You hit the head right on the nail my friend! We have no future if either candidate wins and we continue with a paralyzed two party system. We need Paul and his cabinet of operators to declare an emperorship with dynastic deity rule and anybody that threatens the status quo is used as a carbon absorber to keep the air clean and the planet green.

      4. Sadly, it was a liberal democratic ploy to brainwash children in the public school systems to become reliant on big government and educational institutions instead of their own good intellectual sense developed by hard work in a positive competitive environment. It worked. We are now ripe for conquering. Wars are messy and expensive so our enemies will merely wait for us to self implode. We’ll be defeated by a handful of Facebook accounts and mainstream media. That’s my novel work in progress soon out on Amazon for .99 cents.

      5. There is a certain feel of truth to my cynical imagination. The politically correct cancel culture would have a field day with me. I can imagine thousands of them flinging themselves out of windows and off cliffs because I declare that I don’t care that I’m a dinosaur, I still got my RAWR, and if children and small animals are afraid of me, it saves them from being stepped on because as we all know, dinosaurs never look at their feet or where they step. All the filled in tar pits prove that.

      6. Paul would not accidentally command people to take a shit…OMG LOL! Funny tho! Yeah, he’s got to control himself…watch his speech and his thoughts…so much responsibility…I gotta work that into the story…maybe part of Billy-Bob’s dialogue…OMG!

  4. Scientists are human too! Afforded all the potential bad traits that we all have. That’s why the inclusion of the peer verification tool — the scientific method. A principle to, in-part, protect scientists from their own fallible human nature. I agree George. Scientists per say, are not the potential evil. Human nature is!

    1. Corkywk: Never in my life would I have imagined that, in the 21st Century, a sitting President of the United States Of America would demonize a rival candidate by uttering the words, “If elected, he’ll believe scientists!” It was bad enough when they started spitting out the word “Liberal” as an affront, but demonizing scientists “takes the cake” as they say. We are, it seems, in end-times. Thus the need for a new Messiah! Paul! Thanks for commenting!

    1. Thanks for popping in! I’m leaving a few chapters up for those who need to get up to speed, so I’ve altered my method slightly. You’re writing about murderers and witches and I’m now writing about the new Messiah. Humanity cannot avoid the supernatural! Great accomplishment on you publishing btw, impressive!

  5. A synchronous, million-mind organism might be able to manipulate reality, if not perform telekinesis or transmutation — morph matter to suit its needs. X-Men style.
A fast paced scene. Fun to read.

      1. I’m concentrating on learning AWS + Lambdas + TypeScript just get get productive. Then there’s Rust and due to the business being very security minded… I received a brand new Macbook that I have to now learn. I hate Apple. But now I have to learn Mac. Fortunately, the FreeBSD Linux inside the MacOS is somewhat familiar.
Other than that… sittin’ at home, writing code, learning, resenting the fact that I now work for a *very* retail focused company. But the guys are good guys and I’ve known them for years.
Been reading Elmore Leonard. His short stories are inspiring. Not for the content (humdrum stuff), but the prose, the style, the skill. I try to read for education and end up just reading.

  6. This reminds me of a couple of the Umberto Eco books where, what was once light-hearted fraud, becomes real when all the players start believing in it. (Foucalt’s Pendulum and Baudalino).

Can’t wait to see what happens next.

    1. One cannot ignore the impact religion has not only on our society, but in our day to day life. Even if religion is merely a delusion…it alters and influences our behavior. Paul is stepping from science into…religion? Mysticism?

      1. yes religion is a a aspect of life but not life. Humans are still learning to nurture this. Yes religion was a way how our life styles were molded around. yes paul is changing his path i observed.

i wonder from here where you will take this. I am seriously looking forward to the part you are making Akrira as a Goddess like lord shiva
